Our first full day in the Blue Mountains started with a trip to Katoomba for breakfast, which turn into a bit of an ordeal. It turns out today they were having a street festival which blocked off the main route into and out of town. We are not really sure what the festival was all about (besides setting up tents to sell things), but there were a significant number of people dressed up in all sorts of gear, from skeletons to Roman warriors to giraffes. We probably could have asked someone but I think they may have ruined the fun a bit.
On the south end of Katoomba there is a lookout over the Three Sisters, a rock formation with three pillars. The entire valley next to the town is quite spectacular, and appears almost sunk into the ground with sharp edges all around. Most of the walking tracks into the valley begin with steep staircases. In fact, staircases or other forms of stairs were the name of the game today. Have doing a quick walk around the Three Sisters we proceeded over to the Leura Cascades, an easy walk down a set of cascades on a stream. It ends in a waterfall, but we weren’t able to get a great view of it.
We stopped for a quick lunch in Leura (a busy place!) and then proceeded to what they call the Observation Hut. It’s basically just a little cafe, but there are many walking tracks that start there. We went down another set of stairs to Empress Falls, and from there did a few kilometer walk around the edge of a gulley and back up onto the plateau. All in all some very beautiful scenery.
Tomorrow we plan on heading down some tracks on the other side of the plateau which start very close to the hotel, so we shouldn’t have to drive at all.

Wow, toute une belle journée! Il faisait environ 2 degrés quand nous sommes sortis dehors. Il me manquait définitivement un foulard. Notre premier arrêt fut a Katoomba, à 10 km de Blackheath, où nous logeons. Quel zoo dans les rues de la ville. Un festival prenait place. Des kiosques longeaient les 2 côtés de la rue principale et des gens étaient déguisés. On ne sais pas s’il y avait un thème, car certains portaient des costumes d’animaux (ex. girafe), d’autres de skelette ou même de guerriers.
De là, nous nous sommes rendus au point de vue des Three Sisters. C’est une formation rocheuse ayant 3 piliers. La vue sur la vallée qui était devant était sublime. Des millions d’arbres couvrant le sol, avec les parois très escarpées. Après la visite aux Three Sisters, nous avons marché un petit sentier ayant des tonnes de marches pour descendre dans la vallée, jusqu’à Leura Cascades. C’est une série de cascades qui mêne à une chute, sur laquelle nous avons eu peu de vue.
Nous nous sommes arrêtés à Leura pour dîner. La ville était très occupée. Beaucoup de trafic. Ensuite, nous sommes allés au Conservatory Hut, un site où se trouve un petit café et quelques sentiers. Nous avons fait celui pour se rendre à Empress Falls (Chutes Empress) et avons poursuivi avec le Sentier de la Nature. Dans la forêt ici vit des moyennes perruches. Elles sont adorables, avec le ventre et la tête rouge éclatant.
Demain, départ tôt pour faire une randonnée d’environ 6 heures.
